The rain has finally stopped. The sun is breaking through the clouds and steam is rising from the sidewalks at 7am. Where I am, Jimei University , students from all over China and the world come to study. The campuses are spread thought the Jimei district of Xiamen. In June the city's symbol blooms in time for graduation. Some call it the graduation tree, others a Phoenix rising from the ashes.
If it were a week day students would be quietly sitting out side by the lake or in the gardens studying. Sunday mornings on the campus are usually lazy. You might see a couple people jogging or playing basketball, but other than that the place is asleep.
Today there is activity everywhere. The seniors who have been parading around and posing for photos in their caps and gown are finally gone. The students who will start as freshmen in September are here for an orientation. At the University's main gates, the men who guard the entrance have been coerced into taking pictures of proud parents with their now collegiate offspring.
It feels like progress....
