For my favorite player....
I did not get the opportunity to feel even a twinge of homesickness in Jimei.
As I opened the balcony doors to my apartment and let the sunshine in, I heard a familiar thwack. It was there again the next morning and into the evening. Occasionally the sound was followed by a chorus of hoorah! As I sat out enjoying the final rays of the day's light I realized it was the sound of a baseball bat as it meets with it's target.
Every weekend since, the boys of summer have been celebrating their season on the fields of the athletic college. There are 8 teams in their little league. 1 from Jimei University, 1 from Xiamen University, 1 made up of Japanese business men, and 5 of varying ages of Taiwanese nationals.
The sole female presence is a student from Xiamen University. She learned to love the sport after learning about it from an American professor and has been allowed to play with the over 50 team.
The senior team members are by far the most passionate. Many speak English with American accent, having grown up in the US. Tents, stools for fans and grills for tailgating. A person could really loose track of where they are after spending time with them. Certainly, China seems a long way off.
